Ericeira is a small fishing town on the coast north-west of Lisbon, and Europe’s first World Surfing Reserve. Whether you’re after your first wave, a social dorm, or a cheap bed close to Ribeira d’Ilhas, it’s one of the easiest surf towns in Portugal to base yourself in.

Where you sleep decides how much of the day you spend getting to the water. All seven are in or near town. Praia do Sul and Praia dos Pescadores are the town beaches, and Ribeira d’Ilhas is about a 20-minute walk north along the coast (Outsite’s figure, from the centre).

How to choose a surf hostel in Ericeira

What’s your surf level?

Beginners should pick a hostel that sells lessons or a surf pack, so a coach takes you to the right beach for the day’s conditions. More experienced surfers care about getting to the reefs north of town, Ribeira d’Ilhas and Coxos, which is easier with a car or bike than from any dorm.

Solo traveller or group?

Solo travellers get the most from hostels with a built-in social programme: shared dinners, BBQs or a sunset session. If you’re travelling with friends, a private room in a surf hostel still keeps you close to the people and the advice.

Are lessons included?

Mostly not. Of the seven hostels below, only The Salty sells stays with daily lessons and board hire built in, and only when you book its packages directly. Hostel & Surfcamp 55 sells multi-day Surf Packs, and the rest sell lessons as extras. Laneez lists group lessons at €45 and private lessons at €95, which gives you a benchmark for a lesson in town.

A dorm bed was €24 for 20 October on Hostelworld, where the hostel scores 9.7/10 (checked 6 Oct 2026). It sits on Rua Eduardo Burnay, about half a kilometre from the centre. Lessons aren’t in the room rate. Its own site sells 4- and 7-day Surf Packs that bundle a bed, lessons with Ericeira Surf Academy and board hire, with separate options for beginners and for intermediate or advanced surfers. A 4-day beginner pack with a dorm bed was listed at €313 to €545, depending on dates.

• Good for: a structured surf week on a budget.
• Worth knowing: there’s a lounge, but no bar or party programme.

2. WOT Ericeira Surf Social (best for meeting people)

The cheapest bed in this list: €21 a night for 20 October on Hostelworld, where it scores 9.0/10 (checked 6 Oct 2026). It’s about 1 km from the centre on Rua das Lombas, and the listing describes it as a 4-minute walk from the beach. There’s a pool, a skate ramp, beer pong and a DIY barbecue. Staff can arrange a surf lesson, but the listing doesn’t say what it costs.

• Good for: solo travellers who want a social hostel with a pool.
• Worth knowing: it’s slightly further out than the hostels in the old town.

3. Surfers Den Ericeira (best small surf house)

A dorm bed was €24 for 20 October, and it scores 9.0/10 on Hostelworld (checked 6 Oct 2026). It’s on Rua dos Bombeiros Voluntários, about 0.6 km from the centre, and offers surf classes plus board and wetsuit hire. The listing doesn’t say whether classes are included, so ask when you book. Guests get a WhatsApp group for organising sessions and evenings.

• Good for: a low-key surf house close to the town beaches.
• Worth knowing: there’s no official website, so book through Hostelworld.

4. The Salty Ericeira (best all-inclusive surf and yoga package)

Formerly the Salty Pelican. The Salty’s own packages include daily lessons and board hire for all levels, from €374 for 3 nights or €799 for 7 nights. Rooms booked on Hostelworld don’t include yoga, lessons or board hire. It’s on Travessa dos Moinhos, about 0.45 km from the centre. The weekly programme has a pizza social twice a week, a Monday circle dinner, a Wednesday BBQ and a Friday tapas and wine night.

• Good for: a surf-and-yoga week where everything is organised for you.
• Worth knowing: it’s the priciest way to stay in this list, so compare the package with a bed plus lessons booked separately.

5. Laneez Ericeira Surf House (best for daily lessons)

Laneez runs daily surf lessons that guests can sign up for without booking ahead, from absolute beginner to advanced. Its surf page lists group lessons at €45 and private lessons at €95, and it also offers outrigger-canoe surfing. The house is on Rua Dr. Eduardo Burnay in the centre. Bed prices aren’t published online, and we didn’t find it on Hostelworld, so book on its own site.

• Good for: beginners who want to decide day by day whether to surf.
• Worth knowing: check room prices directly with the hostel.

6. Chill in Ericeira Surfhouse (best for an in-house surf school)

Chill in Ericeira runs its own surf school for all levels, with separate products from a first-wave lesson to coaching and surf guiding. Lessons appear to be sold separately from the bed. It has a sunset bar with occasional food events, and Friday evenings with live music. Bed prices aren’t published online, and it isn’t on Hostelworld (Ericeira Chill Hill is a different property).

• Good for: surfers who want lessons, guiding and a bar in one place.
• Worth knowing: confirm what’s included when you book.

7. Outsite Ericeira – Boavista, formerly Selina (best for longer stays)

The old Selina Boavista now runs as Outsite Ericeira – Boavista. It’s on Rua da Boavista, about 0.2 km from the centre, with Praia do Sul and Pescadores in walking distance and Ribeira d’Ilhas a 20-minute coastal walk away. It scores 8.9/10 on Hostelworld (checked 6 Oct 2026). There’s a rooftop pool, community dinners and a rooftop DJ sunset session. It doesn’t offer surf lessons, and Hostelworld showed no dorm price for our dates. Outsite advertises monthly winter stays at €800.

• Good for: remote workers staying a month, who book lessons in town.
• Worth knowing: one Hostelworld reviewer says it is “not a social hostel”.

Ericeira’s main surf breaks

Save The Waves describes the reserve as about 5 km of coastline with “a high density of outstanding surf breaks”, including Ribeira d’Ilhas and Coxos. It was approved in February 2011 and dedicated in October 2011, making it the second World Surfing Reserve overall and the first in Europe.

• Foz do Lizandro (beginner). A sandy beach break at the river mouth south of town, used by surf schools.
• Praia do Sul and Praia dos Pescadores (beginner to intermediate). The town beaches, walkable from every hostel in the old town.
• Ribeira d’Ilhas (intermediate). A right-hand point break north of town, and the best-known wave in the reserve.
• Coxos (advanced). A heavy right-hand reef break further north, for experienced surfers only.

How to get to Ericeira from Lisbon

• By bus. Carris Metropolitana runs several lines between Lisbon’s Campo Grande terminal and the Ericeira bus terminal, including line 2740 via the A8 and line 2801 via the A21/A8. Check the live timetable on the line page before you go.
• By car. Take the A8 towards Mafra, then the A21 into Ericeira. A car also makes it easy to reach Coxos and the breaks north of town.
• By taxi, Uber or Bolt. The most convenient option with a board bag, especially from the airport, and reasonable if you split it.

Frequently asked questions

Ericeira or Peniche for surfing?

Both are excellent, but they suit different trips. Ericeira is closer to Lisbon and is a compact town, with the reefs of the World Surfing Reserve just north of it, so it suits a short trip or a mix of surfing and city time. Peniche sits on a peninsula with beaches facing different directions, so something is usually working. Is Ericeira a party town?

Not really. Ericeira is a small surf town, and evenings at its hostels revolve around shared dinners, BBQs, beer pong and sunset sessions rather than club nights. WOT Ericeira Surf Social and Chill in Ericeira are the most social picks above. Yes, as long as you stay on the beginner beaches. Foz do Lizandro and the town beaches are where the surf schools teach. Coxos and the other reefs north of town are for experienced surfers.
