The Algarve has two surf coasts. The south coast between Lagos and Sagres faces away from most Atlantic swell, so its beach breaks are often smaller and gentler. The west coast north of Sagres, at Arrifana and Amado, takes the swell head-on. Sagres sits on the corner between them, which is why surf hostels there pick whichever coast is working that day.

Why come here

  • Two coastlines facing different ways, a short drive apart around Sagres, so one side often works when the other doesn't
  • Surf hostels in and around Sagres run their own lessons, surf packages or a daily beach shuttle (listings checked 6 Oct 2026)
  • Lagos, the Algarve's backpacker town, is a short drive east of Sagres if you want nightlife between sessions
