Lisbon Goodmorning Solo Traveller Hostel

Goodmorning is the hostel to pick if you're travelling alone and want company from the first morning. It doesn't take families or groups larger than 3, so almost everyone is on their own. Staff serve pancakes at the free breakfast, run a group activity every day, cook a communal dinner at 8pm and take guests out every night, often to Bairro Alto across the street. The hostel says it isn't a party hostel but has a party vibe. It held a 9.9/10 Hostelworld score when we checked, but it isn't cheap: dorms started at €30 a night, and about half the guests add the all-inclusive Not-So-Solo package. Guests must be 18 or over.

Lisbon Yes! Lisbon Hostel
Baixa, Lisbon
Yes! Lisbon is a party hostel, and an organised one. The bar is open all day, staff cook a sit-down dinner every night at 8:30pm, and the hostel's own pub crawl leaves from the bar at 10:30pm, Tuesday to Sunday, with a free shot. Meeting people takes no effort. The hostel's pitch is that you party in the lounge and bar, then sleep in quiet rooms. It's on Rua de São Julião in Baixa, a few streets from Rua Augusta and Praça do Comércio. Hostelworld scored it 9.7/10 when we checked, and dorms started at €20 a night before Lisbon's €4 city tax. If you want early nights, pick somewhere calmer.

A safe pick for a first visit: Lisbon Lounge sits in Baixa, a few minutes' walk from the river squares and the metro, includes breakfast and scores 9.7 on Hostelworld. The paid family dinner and the hostel's own pub crawl make it easy to meet people if you want to. Dorms share bathrooms, and Baixa is the city's main tourist area.

Lisbon Lost Inn Lisbon Hostel
Chiado, Lisbon
Lost Inn puts you within walking distance of Pink Street, Bairro Alto and Cais do Sodré station, and its bar hosts free events with a nightly sangria time. Curtained beds and key-card lockers help with sleep and security, and it scores 9.4 on Hostelworld. Breakfast costs extra.

Inn Possible suits solo travellers who want a ready-made group: it is small, runs activities every day and offers a shared dinner and an evening pub crawl. Its spot between Alfama and Mouraria puts the old town and downtown nightlife within a few minutes' walk. Breakfast is not included in the Hostelworld rate.

Lagos Top City Hostel & Suites
Old Town (inside the city walls), Lagos
Top City had the highest Hostelworld score of the big Lagos social hostels when we checked (9.3 from about 2,400 reviews), and the rooftop pool is a real draw. It runs pub crawls and BBQ nights but also has private suites, so it suits people who want a social hostel without a pure party one. Dorm beds cost more here than at most Lagos hostels.

Lagos Rising Cock Party Hostel

This is the hostel to pick if going out every night is the point of your Lagos trip: the pub crawl is free and nightly, and breakfast is included. It is dorms only and built around partying, so sleep and privacy come second. It also closes from mid-November to March.

Cloud 9 is a small, social alternative to Rising Cock with the same free nightly pub crawl, plus air conditioning in every room and a rooftop with sea views. The 18 to 45 age limit and the drinking-game nights make the crowd clear. Pick it if you want to go out but also want a cool room to sleep in.

Porto Porto Spot Hostel
City centre, Porto
Porto Spot is a social hostel that doesn't hide it. Breakfast is free, dinner is served on the patio every day, the staff organise pub crawls and, on selected days, walking tours, and the hostel's own site says it likes to party and to make barbecues. It's in a 1935 building designed by Portuguese architect Armenio Losa, refurbished with key-card rooms and free security lockers. According to Hostelworld it's about five minutes' walk from Capela das Almas and around 15 minutes from Porto Cathedral. Hostelworld rated it 9.1/10 when we checked, and dorms started at €15 a night before Porto's €3 city tax.

Nice Way Porto is good value for a central, social hostel: dorms from €14.45, a bar with a daily happy hour and organised tours, a minute from São Bento station. Breakfast is extra (€5), and the hostel is on a third floor with a lift.

Sunset Destination is the pick if you want a pool and river views at dorm prices, and being inside Cais do Sodré station makes beach days on the Cascais line easy. The hostel itself says to expect a fun, energetic vibe because of the nightlife around it, so light sleepers may prefer somewhere quieter.

Cats Porto mixes a social programme (happy hour, pub crawl, free dinner nights and a rooftop bar) with a private bathroom in every room, right beside the Cathedral. Breakfast and towels cost extra (€7 for the full breakfast, €4 for a towel), and luggage storage on departure day is €2.

PILOT is the straightforward choice in Porto for meeting people: the bar never closes, the hostel runs its own pub crawl and it says most guests travel solo. Its 8.8 Hostelworld score is solid rather than outstanding, and a 24-hour bar means it is not the place for early nights.

GSPOT is built for nights out. Every evening there's a happy hour with pizza and margaritas before the group heads out to Bairro Alto, just around the corner, and the hostel only takes guests aged 18 and over. Breakfast is free, the dorms have 8, 10 or 12 beds with individual lockers and privacy curtains, and the Love Triangles sourdough pizzeria is on site. The hostel says tram, train and metro are all under two minutes' walk away. Hostelworld rated it 8.1/10 when we checked, and dorms started at €16 a night before the €4 city tax. It's card-only, so don't plan on paying cash.
