Head to head

The two questions everyone asks

Is Holafly or Airalo better for Portugal?

Short answer: Airalo, unless you need heavy unlimited use.

For a typical hostel trip, Airalo. Holafly sells only unlimited plans, while Airalo also sells fixed-data plans: 10 GB for 7 days was $10.00 when we checked, against $27.50 for Holafly's 7-day unlimited plan.

If you want unlimited, the 7-day prices are close ($27.00 Airalo, $27.50 Holafly), but the terms differ. Airalo's unlimited plan drops to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day. Holafly states no daily cap, but limits hotspot sharing to 1 GB a day. Heavy users who don't tether lean Holafly; everyone else saves with Airalo.

Airalo or Yesim?

Short answer: Airalo, unless you need heavy unlimited use.

On fixed data, Airalo was cheaper at every size we compared: 10 GB for 30 days cost $11.00 at Airalo and $19.20 at Yesim, even with Yesim's discount.

On unlimited, Yesim was slightly cheaper for 15 and 30 days ($46.80 and $68.40, against $48.00 and $69.00) and lets you pick any length up to 30 days. But Yesim's page doesn't name its Portuguese network or a daily speed cap, and says hotspot use depends on the operator. Airalo names NOS, Vodafone and MEO.

Before you buy

Three checks, five minutes

Staying in hostels? Most have wifi, so the eSIM mainly covers maps, messages and tickets while you're out. That usually points to a fixed plan.

  1. Check your phone takes an eSIM

Look under Settings, then Mobile or Cellular, for an option to add an eSIM. The phone must also be unlocked, or it won't accept another network.

  2. Choose fixed data or unlimited

On hostel wifi most of the day? A fixed plan is enough. Working remotely, streaming or sharing a hotspot? Compare the unlimited plans' daily speed caps and hotspot rules above.

  3. Install it at home, switch it on when you land

Installing needs an internet connection, so do it on wifi before you fly. Several plans only start counting days once they connect to a Portuguese network.

eSIM Portugal FAQ

Do I need an eSIM in Portugal, or can I use a physical SIM?

Either works. An eSIM is set up before you land and needs no shop visit. A Portuguese prepaid SIM from MEO, NOS or Vodafone gives you a local number, but you buy it in person. EU and EEA phone plans can usually roam in Portugal at home rates, so check your own plan first.

Which mobile networks does a Portugal eSIM use?

Portugal's networks are MEO, NOS and Vodafone. Airalo, Holafly and Saily name all three on their Portugal pages; Yesim's page didn't name its network when we checked on 6 Oct 2026.

Are unlimited eSIMs really unlimited?

Not always at full speed. Airalo's Portugal page says speed drops to 1 Mbps after 3 GB a day on its unlimited plan. Holafly and Yesim refer to a fair-use policy. Check the daily allowance and the hotspot rule before you pay for unlimited.

Does a Portugal eSIM work in Madeira and the Azores?

Madeira and the Azores are part of Portugal and use the same national networks, so a Portugal plan applies there too. Signal can be weaker in mountains and remote valleys.

Can I use one eSIM for Portugal and Spain?

Not with a Portugal-only plan. If your route crosses into Spain, compare each provider's Europe or regional plan instead.
