Our verdict

The Independente is for travellers who want a grand building and a top-of-the-hill address more than a party. It's in two restored late-19th-century palaces directly opposite the Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara, between Bairro Alto's nightlife and Príncipe Real, and now presents itself as a boutique hotel with shared dorms and 22 suites. Gandaia Club, its restaurant and rooftop bar, is on site. Dorms use custom triple bunks with built-in storage, and there are female-only dorms. Hostelworld rated it 8.1/10 when we checked, and dorms started at €16 a night.

Who it suits

Good for

  • Travellers who want a historic building
  • Nights out in Bairro Alto without a party hostel
  • Women who want a female-only dorm
  • Mixed groups who want dorms and suites under one roof

Not for

  • Anyone who dislikes high bunks (dorms use triple bunks)
  • Travellers who want breakfast in every rate (it varies by room type)
  • Anyone after an organised pub crawl
