Our verdict

Living Lounge is the pick if you want a central, good-looking hostel that's sociable without being a party hostel. Every room is decorated by a local artist around a Lisbon theme, the free breakfast is generous (pancakes, eggs, bread, fruit), and the lounge, bar and dinners make it easy to meet people. It's on Rua do Crucifixo in Baixa-Chiado with the metro across the street, so Rua Augusta, Chiado and Bairro Alto are all walkable. It opened in 2008, from the team behind Lisbon Lounge Hostel. Hostelworld rated it 9.6/10 when we checked, and dorms started at €21 a night.
