What is the cheapest way to get from Lisbon airport to the city centre?

lisbon airport transport budget metro

Landing at Lisbon Humberto Delgado Airport and not sure of the best option. I've seen mentions of the metro, bus, and Uber. What's the most budget-friendly option and how long does each one take roughly?

The metro is cheapest. Take the Red Line from Aeroporto station to Alameda (about 20 minutes), then change to Green or Blue for the city centre. Total cost: €1.85 for the ticket plus a one-off €0.50 for a reusable Viva Viagem card. Very straightforward.

Bus 744 to Campo Grande is another cheap option at around €2 and drops you at a useful metro interchange. The Aerobus express costs €4.50 but is less crowded and stops at key tourist points like Marquês de Pombal, Rossio, and Praça do Comércio.

Uber is surprisingly affordable in Lisbon. Airport to Alfama or Bairro Alto typically costs €8–14 depending on time of day. During rush hour it can spike to €18–25. It's much better value than a metered taxi and drivers almost always have AC.

Official taxis are regulated but significantly more expensive than Uber — expect €15–25 for the same journey. Taxi queues are outside the terminal exits. Never accept a ride from someone approaching you inside the airport — use only the metered cabs outside.

The metro is fine even with luggage — there are lifts at Aeroporto station. If heading to Chiado or Baixa, take it to Rossio and walk. Download the Carris/Metropolitano app for real-time departures before you land so you're not caught out.

Traveling in a group of 3 or more? Pre-booking an airport transfer often works out cheaper per person than Uber when split. Many Lisbon hostels can arrange this or recommend trusted transfer companies. Ask when you make your booking.

Night arrival after 1am? The metro stops around that time. Options become Uber, taxi, or the Linha Noturna night bus (runs hourly, costs €2). Check the Carris website for routes serving your hostel's neighbourhood — several night routes cover key areas.
