I'm a woman traveling alone for the first time and Portugal is top of my list. I'll be staying mostly in hostels in Lisbon and Porto. Are the hostels generally safe? Any specific precautions I should take or areas to avoid?

Portugal is one of the safest countries in Europe for solo travel. Lisbon and Porto consistently rank among Europe's safest capital cities. Hostels here are well-run with lockers, social common areas, and a respectful backpacker crowd. I've traveled solo there three times without issues.

The main thing to watch in Lisbon is petty theft — pickpockets target Tram 28, the miradouros (viewpoints), and crowded areas like Alfama. Keep your bag in front of you in these spots. The hostels themselves are very safe; I never felt uncomfortable in any of them.

Most hostels offer female-only dorm rooms if you request them when booking. These fill up fast so book early. In my experience, Portuguese hostels attract a friendly backpacker crowd rather than heavy party types. The vibe is sociable but respectful.

Porto felt even safer to me than Lisbon. The city is compact and well-lit at night. I walked home alone at midnight regularly without any issues. The hostel community in Porto is tight-knit and very welcoming to solo female travelers specifically.

Make sure your hostel locker is big enough for your passport and valuables before you book — check reviews mentioning locker size. Always bring your own padlock. A TSA-approved combination lock is lighter than a keyed one and doubles as an airport luggage lock.

The Algarve is very safe and tourism-oriented. Lagos and Sagres are popular with solo female travelers. The hostel communities tend to be friendly surf and beach crowds. I met most of my Portugal travel friends at a hostel in Lagos — brilliant atmosphere.

Save the emergency number: 112 (works across the whole EU). Share your hostel details with someone back home. The standard advice applies — don't leave drinks unattended in bars. But honestly, Portugal feels safer than most Western European destinations I've visited.
